OTL Recap for 9/3/06
>> Sunday
I guess writing weekly synopses of Outside the Lines is pretty lame, but man, that show kicks ass. And I need to put my old man-ish sleep schedule to use somehow.
This morning's installment concerned Diamondbacks rookie reliever Tona Pena. Pena is a Dominican, who originally signed in 2003 using his younger cousin's name Adriano Rosario before being found out and deported from the United States.
The episode highlights two primary insights: 1) The foreign scouting system, much like the NCAA, exploits the talent of naive teenagers to make their handlers wealthy, and 2) Scouts are not interested in Latin players in their late teens or older. The feature also includes an appearance by the anti-Christ, Scott Boras. I would catch the rerun if you can.
As a follow-up to last week's OTL post, I found out last night that my own brother recently purchased a pair of Starbury Ones (not having even heard about the OTL feature). Although private university-educated medical students don't exactly fit Starbury's target market, sales is sales, I guess.
