Actually, I'll concede AL MVP. Mauer makes a better case than Ordonez. I think the anticipation of the Home Run derby had me putting too much weight on power numbers.
As for AL Cy Young, here's my reasoning:
Innings Pitched:
Liriano - 88.1
Halladay - 129.1
While Liriano has the best ERA among qualifying pitchers, his WHIP (0.97) is practically the same as Halladay's (1.03) and Halladay has started almost twice as many games as Liriano.
Yeah, I'm right with you on innings. That always means a lot to me, but...it's hard. He's been soooo good. But you're right; I would've gone with Santana or Halladay if not for the fact that Liriano should catch up quite a bit in the second half.
I guess it's how you interpret "mid-season award"--which is just bullshit we're making up anyway so I could've said Antonio Alfonseca if I wanted. In his case, I gave Liriano the benefit of half of a season to back it up.
With Mauer, I sort of did the opposite because I assume he'll still play great but fall off considerably nonetheless (.300 second half or something). Plus he might be a stretch over Hafner, but Dave Sampair says he's a nice guy, so that reasoning follows with what actual beat writers use.
