"Say no to racism!" Says owner who only hires Mexicans
>> Saturday
Saturday, MLS participated in FIFA's worldwide "Say No to Racism" campaign. Racism has been a growing problem in international soccer. While I applaud the initiative to wipe this blemish from the beautiful game, MLS probably could have done some better photo selection when setting up their website Saturday (above).
The MLS website showed a team picture of Los Angeles-based club Chivas USA in conjunction with the story on the anti-racism effort. Chivas USA is an offshoot of popular Mexican club Chivas de Guadalajara. CD Guadalajara is primarily famous because in addition to their success in Mexican soccer, Chivas have a policy of only signing Mexicans. When Chivas owner Jorge Vergara bought into MLS two years ago with Chivas USA, he tried to get around MLS's rules that state no more than 3 international players can be on each team by setting up tryouts for Mexican-Americans only. MLS eventually made him comply with the rule, and some Caucasian players now play for Chivas USA.
But once again. An owner of a team that only signs Mexicans, sets up a team in the US, and at first, only lets Mexicans try out. This team is MLS's poster-boys to make sure that racism stays out of football.
Diga "No!" a racismo!!!!

So wait...MLS wouldn't let them choose to only sign Mexicans while they endorse a rule having all but three players on each roster American-born? Am I the only one who finds this completely hypocritical? So what if he only wants to sign Mexicans. If he can win with a roster of all Mexican-Americans, more power to him.
The reason why Americans are so highly touted in MLS is because of the failures of the old NASL, where teams signed international stars at the peak of their careers like Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, and George Best. This started a spending spree among all the teams, eventually leading to the league's financial demise. The "No more than 3 internationals rule" is more for keeping the financial ship straight than xenophobia.
Likewise, Chivas USA couldn't win with a roster of mostly Mexicans. They finished dead last in 2005.
