Bravo to ESPN for this story. Athletes being the glorified heroes that they are, this is the type of story that can bring awareness to mental illnesses. I know for a fact that there are professors at Marquette (these are supposed to be among the most educated minds in the country) that stereotype people with bipolar disorder as murderers and evil people. It took us hundreds of years to see minorities as people. We're just starting to see homosexuals as people. Perhaps this kind of thing can expand our understanding of "crazy" people beyond the cat-throwing lady on The Simpsons.
I'm always amazed how easily and callously some of the most intelligent people often disregard mental and emotional limitations in general. Like you said, it's funny how readily physical differences among people are acknowledged, yet emotional differences are accepted so grudgingly. I've never understood how that can be.
