Luis Gonzalez--Modest, Retarded, or Both?
>> Saturday
Evidently, ESPN Radio is giving Luis Gonzalez, aka "Gonzo," the chance to audition for his not-so-far-off post-retirement broadcasting career during these playoffs. My advice to Luis: cease aging, and do not retire ever.
During the sixth inning of the Cardinals-Padres game this afternoon, he and Generic P.B.P. Guy Jr. were talking about David Eckstein's importance to the Cardinals. Predictably, Gonzo oversold the point and, even more predictably, brought up his own career in the process.
According to Gonzo--and I'm not making this up; he actually said this--the MVP of the D'Backs 2001 World Series Championship team was...
Craig Counsell.
Craig Counsell 2001: .275, 4, 38, .359 OBP, .362 SLG
Luis Gonzalez 2001: .325, 57, 142, .429 OBP, .682 SLG, ST (Steroids Taken): lots
Randy Johnson 2001: Both
Curt Schilling 2001: Awesome
But I guess since the MVP tends to be whatever the hell anyone wants it to be, Gonzo really can't be wrong. But for the record, let it be known that I'm not just picking on this one comment. Luis didn't make a very good color guy.
By the way...Speaking of active players doing color, remember how awesome Al Leiter was a few years ago during the playoffs? Why hasn't he taken over McCarver's spot yet? I'm serious.
Oh, also...Remember how Harry Caray used to call Luis Gonzalez "Louie Gonzal-eez"? I sure do.
