Just when you thought it was safe, guess who's back

With preseason optimism for the Chicago Bulls arguably at its highest point since the end of the Jordan era, this piece of news seems wholly out of place. The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that one of the players looking to take the Bulls' last roster spot is former Marquette University underachiever Scott Merritt (shown above, looking not only like a dwarf, but like he's stoned out of his mind while Nick Collison walks away with the 2003 National Semifinal game).
Last season Merritt averaged 10.7 points and 5.8 boards per game leading the Austin Toros of the NBA Developmental League to a 24-24 record, and yes, it looks like he still has the same dirty 'stache he did when he was playing college ball. Hopefully for Scott's and the Bulls' sake he can hide in Ben Wallace's shadow as well as he hid in Robert Jackson's.

I know it has become the popular thing to rag on Merritt, especially since he didn't live up to his pre-college hype and had a very disappoiting senior season. However, guess where we would have been had we not had him in 2003? New Orleans, no chance in hell. Minneapolis, nope. We would have lost in the opening weekend, since it was Merritt and not Jackson who had big games in first two rounds of tourney. While D Wade, RJax and Diener have received the lions share of credit for getting Marquette to the Final Four, it would not have happened had it not been for the dirty work of Merritt. Plus, it always helps to have another Marquette guy in the NBA.
Yeah, none of us hated Merritt til the next year. And boy, did we ever hate him.
Yea, I'll admit there was definitely some hate from me directed towards his porn stache. However, two and half years later, I'm appreciative of his accomplishements, especially in 2003(ok, only in 2003).
