What he means is that the Padres weren't a baseball team back then. So the story would have been about a group of southwestern U.S. missionaries hiring someone to track their expenditures.
Here's a potentially more confusing version of the headline if you're a casual baseball fan that doesn't pick up on capitalizations.
Lastly, this story has nothing to do with sports (possibly big-game hunting--that's a stretch, though). But if you didn't hear about it and are a fan of The Simpsons (who isn't?), you should find it hilarious.
