I guess I should...

>> Thursday

...even though my interest level in the match is probably right around the level of everyone else on this blog...except for Zuch, who to my amazement knew that the game was Sunday.

I'm talking of course about the MLS Cup Final (2:30 CT on ABC Sunday. Tune in if your favorite NFL team is getting waxed.) The league's 11th Championship Game pits the Eastern Conference Champion New England Fuckheads Revolution against the Western Conference Champion Houston Dynamo (In their first season in Houston. I got nothing against 'em). Once the Fire are out, I usually can't be brought to pay attention, but since now I'm NOT going to Dallas this weekend for the title bout (Thank you very much Taylor Dickhead Douchebag Twellman), I might as well do a lead in, and watch the battle for the Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy.

It should be an entertaining match, and I'm gonna make no bones about it. I have no idea who is going to win. Every time I think Houston is a team of destiny, I'm reminded of New England's offensive firepower and steadfast backline, which then causes me to think about Houston's talented players who have been there before, and Scottish international Paul Daglish scoring two goals in the Western Conference Final last week.

New England is stocked with U.S. National team regulars and wanna-bes, including aforementioned douchebag asshole fuckhead Twellman and Clint Dempsey (scored the only US goal at the World Cup). GK Matt Reis is having a career year, and has been rock-solid in the playoffs; only surrendering one goal from the run of play in 300 minutes of playoff action. He's still a dick though.

Houston is similarly loaded with dangerous strikers Brian Ching, and 2006 MLS MVP Finalist and 2-time Goal of the Year winner Dwayne DeRosario (who scored the game winner against Chelsea in the All-Star Game.) Houston should also benefit from a rabid supporters section making the short drive from Houston to Dallas that will be able to sing and heckle in English and Spanish for the duration. There may be enough Orange in the stands to make it feel like a home game for Dynamo.

Neither team is short on Cup Final experience. New England has been a losing finalist in 2 of the last 4 MLS Cups ('02 and '05), and is still seeking their first trophy in club history. Houston won two MLS Cup Finals in 2001 and 2003 as the San Jose Earthquakes before relocating to South Texas this past offseason.

The difference-maker will probably be, can Ching and DDR get through the Berlin Wall that is the New England defense? If they can't get opportunities from inside the 18-yard box, I suppose DeRo could always just launch one from midfield like he did in August at Toyota Park against the Fire , in a game I saw with my own eyes from behind the Fire goal, yet still couldn't believe it.

The teams split their season series 0-0-2, each match ending in a 1-1 tie. If I had to pick a team to put money on, I'd probably pick New England to win, but I'll be pulling for Houston, if only to beat those effete, smug, chowder-eating, Kennedy-electing bastards.
