This Would Make No Sense

According to ESPN's "Rumor Central," the A's are interested in Darin Erstad. The A's. Led by stat-lovin', computer-totin', non-old-school grit unappreciator Billy Beane. This doesn't make any sense. See the following:
Welcome to Oaktown?
Jan 9 - The A's remain interested in free agent Darin Erstad as an outfielder and first baseman, the Oakland Tribune reports. If the A's signed Erstad, it would not necessarily prevent them from pursuing a young outfielder via a trade.
It would, however, possibly cause the world to implode if the A's, baseball's best team at objective talent evaluation were to sign a guy who everyone loves because he's gritty, he hustles and he played football* at Nebraska.
*As a punter Seriously, he was a punter, but don't tell McCarver, because he loves that guy..

Assuming this is true, I'd guess that Billy Beane would only do this because he's getting Erstad at 350K/yr with some other team picking up 90% of his salary without even knowing it while getting a compensatory draft pick from some rule that only he knows about and probably invented.
