Surrogate Zuch post: Scrap the RPI for the Pomeroys
>> Thursday
Ok, so maybe the Pomeroy rankings are just as flawed as the RPI (which are SUPER fucked up and should almost be ignored at this point).
But I do like that MU is #8 in the Pomeroys. And that Louisville is ahead of Texas, Stanford, Tennessee (as much as I love 'em), and Indiana. Because they're definitely a #5 team in my opinion.
All I'm saying is that if the selection committee wants to use a formula-driven ranking system in their selection process, the Pomeroys are better than RPI.
Ditch the RPI! It's shiiiiiiiiitttt!!!!

I love the Pomeroy rankings. It's nice to be cheering for the *true* #3 and #8 teams in the country.
We really need a scientific formula for calulating such intangibles as grit, heart, and testicular fortitude.
While the Pomeroy Ratings have a few flaws themselves (most notably dinging mid-majors because of their overemphasis on strength of schedule), they would be a much more accurate representation of teams than the RPI. Now, you cannot rely in numbers alone to evaluate teams/players in basketball, because of the great variables of size, athleticism, and speed and how that effects teams and match-ups (for instance, Wisconsin will be in major shit against a disciplined quick team, Marquette an athletic team with size).
On a related, the Basketball Prospectus website has basically allowed me to ignore the more publicized college basketball coverage from ESPN, SI, Sporting News and the like (besides, I can get enough that by watching ESPN anyway).
Nice blog and absolutely outstanding. You can do something much better but i still say this perfect.Keep trying for the best.
