Pat's 2007 MLB Regular Season Awards

>> Monday

This was a fantastic seaosn with many memorable achievements, lets go through a couple:

NL MVP: Matt Halladay
.340 batting average, 36 home runs, 135 RBI's, and 119 Runs for the upstart Colorado Rockies. Whats not to like about this guy. Not only did he hit the cover off the ball this season, but he also played a stellar Left Field. No way the Rockies even come close in the Wild Card without this guy.
Runner Up: Jimmy Rollins

Cy Young: Jake Peavy
Peavy had one of the best seasons by a starting pitcher, ever! A 19-6 record coupled with a 2.36 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP illustrate how dominate this guys has been. If the Padres could actually score a run, this guy might have had 24-25 wins. Oh, and lets not forget he had 234 strikeouts to only 64 walks. DOMINATE!
Runner Up: No One comes close

Manager of the Year: Bob Melvin
Chicagoans are screaming for Uncle Lou to win this title, but we all know Bob Melvin has this wrapped up. Have you seen their 60 million dollar roster...it blows! This guy somehow put together a 90 win team. He wins hands down.
Runner Up: Lou Piniella. Took a 66 win team to a division title, yes has a 130 million dollar payroll to work with, but did a nice job.

Rookie of the Year: Troy Tulowitzki
Wow this is a hard one to pick with Ryan Braun's year, but Tulowitzki has a .289 batting average, 24 home runs, 98 RBI's. Plus defensively he has a .987 fielding percentage at baseballs most important defensive position.
Runner Up: Ryan Braun. Yes he has great power as he and Prince Fielder carried this team this season, but happened to his glove down the stretch? That man earns serious points from this guy by playing on that Jewish holliday (Shawn Green, you suck), but his defensive blunders will cost him this years award. An .895 fielding percentage and 26 errors is not getting it done at 3rd.

AL Awards

AL MVP: Alex Rodriguez
.314 batting average, 156 RBI's, and 54 home runs automatically make this guys the winner. No one even comes close to what A-Rod did for the Yankees. Does anyone even remember the bashing he took in April when he started slowly? Hey A-Rod, can you please come to the Cubs?
Runner Up: No One

Cy Young: Josh Beckett
What a rebound season from Beckett! The only pitcher with 20 wins, has a 3.27 ERA, and has a 1.14 WHIP. Great season.

Manager of the Year: Joe Torre
We always said, well anybody could manage that team. Well thats no the case this year. Having to patch together a shit ass billpen and rotation, Joe Torre did a magnificent job keeping the team afloat and even challenging the Red Sox for the division title. How fans can ask for his firing is beyond me.

Rookie of the Year: Dustin Pedroia
The Red Sox desperately needed a competant second basemen and Pedroia filled that need, hitting .324.

Knuckle head of the Year: Ned Yost
What the hell were you doing down the stretch. The Brewers collapse can be attributed to their manager losing his cool at critical times. What were you thinking when you got tossed and suspended in those final games, bonehead!

Man who needs some Love: Willie Randolph
Did he pitch in any of those games down the stretch? Was he the teams #3 hitter? With the exception of picher John Mayne, these guys blew it...quit blaming Willie for the players fault. Oh, where have you gone Carlos Beltran?

The direct conflict in reasoning between your last two awards is hilarious

Vinnie 11:13 PM

As delighted as I am to see your bi-monthly triumphant return to YCS, I have to call you out on your Cubs bias in passing on "Ryan Brawwwn" for NL ROY. Yes, he was quite Jewish--I mean, bad--I mean, something not offensive but still meaning "bad"--defensively, but that was the most ridiculous offensive season by a rook since "Poo-jholse" ('member when we still said his name like so?).

And yeah, it wasn't Yost's fault that his pitching staff was highly subpar post-June.

Other than that, I really can't argue much with those picks.

...And I SWEAR I'm not an anti-semite.... just a really horrible comedian... because I'm not Jewish enough... Ok, the over-the-top offensive comments end here. For good!!!

(Sorry for this post, literate individuals.)

Vinnie 11:15 PM

By the way... most awesomest game EVERRRRR...

Paul 9:04 AM

Agreed with Vinnie on Braun. Braun will get it done with the glove later in his career. How can you argue with an OPS of 1.004 and 97 RBI in only 2/3 of a season? He was simply awesome. You're overrating defense slightly.

Vinnie 11:25 AM

We owe Patrick an apology. The nerd stats agree with him. Tulowitzki is way behind Braun in the purely offensive metrics, but he kills Braun in WARP 10.2 to 5.3.

Anonymous,  1:40 PM

Depends on the metric. Braun's VORP is 57.2, ranking 10th in the National League and 18th in baseball. Tulowitzki's VORP is 37.8, ranking 29th in the National League and 52nd in baseball. Despite Tulowitzki's being an insanely good fielder, I'd still vote Braun for Rookie of the Year.

Vinnie 5:09 PM

That was my point, though. WARP takes defense into account; VORP does not. And WARP says Tulowitzki gets a five-win margin over Braun. That's a ton.

Patrick 7:21 PM

Yeah I think it is a strong debate between the two. Braun had a very nice year offensively, but his glove at third would even make my grandma blush. That said, I don't think you can go wrong either way, both had good years and you could make a case for both....

And now that I have a little more time, plan on reading more ridiculous posts by This Guy

Anonymous,  1:46 PM

Man, I'm shocked that defense plays that big of a role (although from the few defensive statistics I understand Tulowitzki compared to Ozzie Smith, and Braun probably resembles Herbert Perry at 3rd)
