YCS Pretends to Know/Care About Real Life Serious Stuff: The Don Imus/Rutgers Women's Hoops Controversy: Take 2
>> Thursday
Gentlemen, consider this long saga ended. Due to our love of the shadiest of the shady, it's only fitting that we look to one of them for guidance to sort out this dilemma.
Snoop, your thoughts?
"It's a completely different scenario. (Rappers) are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We're talking about hoes that's in the 'hood that ain't doing shit, that's trying to get a nigga for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain't no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them muthafuckas say we are in the same league as him. Kick him off the air forever."
It bears mentioning that this is, pretty much without a doubt, the most sensible discourse I've heard on this whole controversy. I'm with Snoop.

What Snoop is saying (I think) is something that more people should be saying. It's a matter of context. Not only is there a difference between Don Imus using the word and a rapper using it, but it's not even fair to lump all rappers in the same category. My knowledge of rap is rather limited, but I do know there's a difference between Outkast saying it and Lil' Wayne saying it. One has an angle of social commentary, and the other, by all indications, is purely degratory.
In Imus's case, he said it as light-hearted humor. Typically, using degrading terms in this context is not advisable, unless you really, really know your audience and your target, and you've made it clear to them that you regard them as an equal. I'm pretty sure Imus didn't do that.
Interesting how Tennessee won the National Championship, yet for better or worse, Rutgers has gotten more publicity.
I worry this could leave us in a situation where the Bruce Pearl Chest-Painted Cavalry may be riding over the next hill.
