Hater post... because Mike encouraged me

>> Saturday

Mike and I are G-Chatting while watching Gameday on ESPN. Because I'm lazy, I'll do a copy and paste:

Michael: oh man
this should be YCS gold
the college gameday crew is going to come back from break an "try to define 'toughness'"

me: yeah, i'm watching this

Michael: i loved bobby knight's commentary earlier
"i never thought id get out of this building alive...i needed digger to protect me three different times...the hell with green."

me: even better they just screwed up, came back from commercial too early and got cut off
love it
i have the volume on sorta low, and about three different times when they said Digger, i swore i heard "n****r"

[The analysts pick guys in college hoops that are "tough." Hubert picks Tyler Hansborough and Blake Griffin. Jay picks Stephen Curry.]

me: i love how hubert's two guys who are "tough" also happen to be like the two best players in college bball
and jay's being the third best
nice sign: "luke eats huskies for breakfast"

Michael: (forehead smack)

me: i guess he's mongolian now

[Out of nowhere, the Harlem Globetrotters appear on screen to preview an upcoming segment as they go to break.]

Michael: harlem globetrotters? WTF?
me: hahaha yes!
just because i love that music

[After commercial, the crew segways to a piece about the death of Kay Yow.]

Michael: ah, the obligatory human interest piece dovetails nicely with the "ok, the segment we just had was completely irrelevant. because 'toughness' on a basketball court can't hold a candle to a cancer battle."

me: of course
psh, big deal
breast cancer
pretty much every woman gets that

Michael: did she have cancer cancer or just cancer?

me: if she was so tough she'd have survived

[The screaming student section has gone silent as they've done the Kay Yow segment.]

Michael: man guys, way to suck the wind out of the building

me: hahaha, no foolin

Michael: i want to hear the nd band play "every time we touch" like the last time i went to the JACC
something inherently hilarious about a techno song sung by a german vixen being played on a tuba by a fat kid from renssallear

me: i also like the sign "Thabeet can't spell ESPN"
typical ND elitist / borderline racist slam

Michael: i also liked the thoroughly unoriginal sign "what was the price of the laptops?"
idiots
what a timely slam
got any hanging chad or judge ito signs too?

me: yeah, what the hell
a) we covered that one better than they ever could [refering to cardboard laptops with Marcus Williams's mugshot on the screen, crafted by friend-of-YCS Mach for the Marquette student section during our 2006 battle with then-#2 UConn] , b) i don't think they would have any remaining players from that team, and c) that guy's a fuckwad

Michael: yea no kidding. that was 3 years ago. anyone from that team 3 years ago, have either graduated or gone to the NBA.

[Harlem Globetrotters segment begins.]

sweet georgia brown!

me: i wish this music just followed me around all day

me: i would probably do everything with a lot more flair and style
do little 360 twirls before i put stuff on people's desks at work
flip my kitchen utensils in the air while i'm cooking and catch them with my toes
'twould be badass

Michael: i dare digger to pick either uconn or mu

[Digger submits his pick of Notre Dame, citing some rubbish about Harngody playing big or something.]

me: digger shocks the world
picks ND

Michael: that almost reads like an onion headline
digger shocks world, picks ND to win at home when ND hosts college gameday

Crean to Indiana.

Being reported by all legitimate news outlets.

Please let this be the most elaborate/cruel April Fools joke ever.

Update: Crean's departure is not an April Fools Joke. But we have obtained video of Coach Crean saying an emotional goodbye to the MU fanbase.

Tom Crean leaving for Indiana... Sad? Confused? Elated? Pissed off?

I'm sure all of the YCS team has something to say about Crean bolting for IU, but I'll go ahead and throw my initial thoughts here. I'm sure Zuch will have more informed notions on the subject, but here are my 2 cents.

Why you should be sad:
1. Crean took us to a Final Four and the postseason in 8 of 9 seasons.
2. Crean has averaged more than 20 wins a season, recruited 3 NBA players and likely another 2 or 3 NBA players-to-be.
3. Crean has had us nationally ranked for much of the last 6 or 7 years.
4. Darrin Horn (Western Kentucky) appears to be headed to South Carolina; he would have been one of the best coaches to replace Crean. Who is going to replace Crean?
5. Not only did Crean have success in winning basketball games, but he got us on national TV, revived school spirit, and helped us sell out many home games (in a huge arena by college basketball standards).

Why you should be confused:
1. Crean has a lot of connections to Marquette. Not only was he fond of the Al McGuire tradition, but his father-in-law is a big shot in the Athletic Deparment, and his wife is very involved in the Marquette community.
2. Hasn't there been talk of him bolting every year since 2003? Why now?
3. Why Indiana? We all know about the Indiana basketball tradition, but how patient will the IU fans be with him? Why purposely step into the big pile of poop that is the current IU basketball program?
4. Does he want to get beat by Bo Ryan and Tom Izzo three to four times a year (or more if you count the Big Ten tourney)? That prospect doesn't seem very fun.

Why you should be elated:
1. According to popular opinion, Crean is actually a huge, selfish jerk. He's a phony, and he's obviously not very loyal. Then again, what college basketball coaches aren't?
2. Despite his outstanding recruiting and program-building, he is a sub-par game coach. He is very bad at drawing up plays at the end of games, has an often-bewildering game plan, and has a reputation of being badly out-coached by the best in the business.
3. I guess the contract buyout will allow us to still pursue a pretty talented coach.

Why you should be pissed off:
Because you met this guy, got to shake his hand, cheered your ass off for his team for 8 seasons, appreciated his success, generally defended him despite your occasional frustration with his performance in big games, and did everything a loyal fan would do for him only to have him bolt for a big public school.

For those of you that come here for Marquette coverage

>> Sunday

Late last night I said to myself, "Vinnie, you know what I could go for right now? A huge annoyance. It's been a while since I intentionally levied a big pile of irritation on you. Why don't we click over to Cracked Sidewalks and check out some postgame reaction to the MU loss."

And of course, I listened to the manipulative bastard. What I read in the comments section of the postgame thread was exactly what I expected--boorish critics with a delusional sense of entitlement coming out of the woodwork to bash Crean, bash the players, and second-guess.

I decided to leave a comment, which I figured I'd repost here--partly because it turned out longer than a lot of our posts. And since we post so little as it is, I'd hate to have any of my precious few sports-related words not appear on this blog.

But mostly, I wanted to post it as a pre-emptive rebuttal to any of the Crean-bashers / player-bashers that might show up here. (The first part, actually, is a direct rebuttal to people who criticized Crean/Burke for letting Lopez get too easy of a shot on the last play.) And even if you're not a Marquette fan, I think the comment makes a point that's relevant to a lot of college basketball fanbases. So here it is:

Ummm... Since when is anyone's "favorite spot on the floor" falling out of bounds toward the baseline and shooting from behind the plane of the backboard? And apparently, some of you were too busy proofreading your list of Tom Crean grievances to catch Burke forcing Lopez into a couple wild fallaway jumpers late in the game. Going by the reactions here, I'd have guessed Lopez shot 90% from the field if I hadn't watched the game.

Was I baffled and frustrated by Jerel's threeball at the end of regulation? Of course. But he's also the biggest reason we had a chance to win there. Also consider a) it was a pretty good look, b) it eliminates the chance for a buzzer heave to beat us, and c) we'd been offensive rebounding very well, so a putback off a long rebound was a plausible outcome. And of course, if the shot drops, we're all running the streets kissing strangers and clicking our heels instead of criticizing the decision.

That's not to say I entirely condone the threeball, nor the fact that we chucked up 29 others, but I also like to think that they treated us to a phenomenal game and a tremendously entertaining and successful style of ball all year. (The Georgetown game was the best live game atmosphere I've ever been a part of, and if that counts for nothing in your mind, you should stop watching sports.) Honestly--Why can't it ever just be, "The circumstances didn't pan out as I hoped, and I'm sad over the outcome." Why does someone always have to be blamed? Not everything in life is someone's "fault." It's ok to admit you're sad over something you can't control. Go have a good cry or play with your dog or whatever it is you need to do. But don't get all hostile toward Tom Crean or toward whomever else on the team because it's unfair to them, and it's bad for your health.

And guess what--You know how many teams appear in the Final Four each year? That's right--four. But I don't know... Maybe the committee should be, like, "Hey, your school won a championship in the '70s. For that, you get a 1-seed and a free pass to the Final Four each year." In fact, they should do that for all teams with any history of success whatsoever. Especially UTEP. I mean, shit, they had a movie made about their championship team. Every year, we could have 57 teams in the Final Four, all coached by Rick Pitino. They'd play one huge game with 30 basketballs (plus 5 moneyballs) in a six-acre warehouse. There'd still only be two baskets, but you'd have "safety pods" at different spots on the floor, and the team who occupied the most pods when "Pop Goes the Weasel" ends would win. I think then, and only then, would every college fanbase get what they "expect" from their program.

My point being: We should totally fire Crean and bring in Coach K. I'm sure he'd leave Duke in a heartbeat. Plus, he's an awesome game coach. Just look at his last four tournament games. I mean, if we're willing to judge Crean that way, why not Coach K? Wait--he's 1-3 with that only win being a one-point win over Belmont? Well, shit. Fire him too then, and hire Belmont's coach.

The asshole in the Brady Quinn jersey

>> Thursday

As best I can, I always try to put on the veil of objectivity when it comes to sports allegiences. But I make no bones about it--Marquette basketball is where that self-control ends and emotion takes over.

....Which is why I always find a reason to try to hate our oppenents (because, unfortunately, hate is not in my blood). But when it comes to ND, it's so easy to put a face on "I hate your ass, and I want your team to lose."

And that asshole in the Brady Quinn jersey just won the prize tonight.

Asshole--You're obviously not a basketball fan. Your best piece of homerific team apparel is a Brady Quinn jersey, yet you have the gall to stand up clapping, all smug and NDasshole-like, before a TV timeout, to make yourself look good, when, in reality, your Quinn-jersey-wearing is just a defense mechanism so you can say (after hopefully a loss), "AT LEAST WE HAVE A FOOTBALL TEAM!"

Guess what, guy-I-don't-know-and-may-be-a-great-guy-if-I-gave-him-a-chance: You might pride yourself on making more money than our graduates (aggregately), but people like us (MU grads) way more than they like your pompous ass.

Go play/watch golf, and enjoy daddy's privilege, you shallow shit. Don't pretend you're a basketball fan because I know you're not.

YCS Shows Love for Trevor when ESPN won't

Trevor Mbakwe, we know you're the new kid in school. You don't know anyone. You're away from home. Maybe it's hard making friends and ESPN certainly isn't helping by ignoring your achievements.

After swatting away a Seton Hall shot tonight, the commentators referred to you as Lawrence Blackledge.

After grabbing a key offensive board, ESPN attributed your effort to Lazar Hayward.
Maybe it's because you're the new guy. Maybe it's because #33 kinda looks like #32. Maybe it's because your name is a bit short on vowels. But we know it was you, Trevor Mbakwe, so we're giving you the credit you deserve.

Looking for Marquette stuff on eBay.

Came across this item. A giant Marquette mat that from the looks of this picture put out by the seller, is used for tailgating. However, it's obvious these fans are not Marquette fans, and the logo was just superimposed on some template.

  1. Conspicuous absence of Marquette gear.
  2. Marquette doesn't have a football team. Who tailgates in shorts in Wisconsin in January?
  3. Where are they tailgating? On the roof of the Bradley Center parking garage?
  4. If these people are Marquette fans, why is there ONLY ONE COOLER?

You Will Suffer Humiliation When The Sports Team From My Area Defeats The Sports Team From Your Area.
As you can see from the calendar, the game is coming up this weekend. I'm sure you are as excited for it as I am, as our cities are rivals and have been for quite some time. Your confidence in your team is high, but rest assured, you will suffer humiliation when the sports team from my area defeats the sports team from your area.

On numerous occasions, you have expressed the conviction that your area's sports team will be victorious. I must admit that every time I hear you make this proclamation, I react with both laughter and disbelief. "Ha!" I say to myself with laughter. "What?!" I say to myself in disbelief. How could you believe that your sports team could beat my sports team? It is clear that yours is inferior in every way.

When the sporting contest begins, the players on your team will be treated as though they are inconsequential. It will be remarkably easy for my team to accumulate more points than yours. There are many reasons for this, starting with the inferior physical attributes of the players representing your area. Strength, speed, and agility are just three of the qualities that the players on the team from your area lack. The players representing my area, on the other hand, have these traits in abundance.

Underscoring your team's inferiority is its choice of colors. It is ludicrous to believe that your team's colors inspire either respect or fear. Instead, they appear to have been chosen by someone who is colorblind or, perhaps, bereft of sight altogether. The colors for my team, on the other hand, are aesthetically pleasing when placed in proximity to one another. They are a superior color combination in every way.

While we are on the subject of aesthetics, let us compare the respective facilities in which our teams play. While my team's edifice is blessed with architectural splendor and the most modern of amenities, yours is a thoroughly unpleasant place in which to watch a sporting contest. I know of what I speak, for I once attended a game between our respective teams in your facility. Let's just say the experience left me wishing that my car was inoperable that day due to mechanical problems, rendering it impossible for me to get to your area to attend the game.

If you need another reason why the sporting franchise representing my area is superior, look no further than the supporters for the two sides. Not only are the supporters of the team from my region more spirited, but they are also more intelligent and of finer breeding than you and the rest of your ilk. In addition, the female supporters of the team from my area possess more attractive countenances and figures than yours. Some of the women from my side that I have observed could make a living by posing for pictures for major men's magazines. The women who cheer for your team, I'm afraid, are far too unattractive to do so.

One of the more pathetic aspects of the team from your area is the fact that only people in your immediate area possess an affinity for it. By means of contrast, the team from my area inspires loyalty and affection in individuals who live in many other geographic locations.

To illustrate this point, let me tell a brief story: Recently, I was on vacation in an area of the country far away from my own, and I saw many individuals wearing items of clothing that bore the insignia of my team. I approached one such individual and asked him if he originated from my area. He said no, explaining that he simply liked the team from my area and had for many years. Interestingly enough, during this trip, I saw no clothing or other paraphernalia bearing the insignia of your team.

Do you still doubt that the team from your area is inferior to the one from mine? Just look at our teams' respective histories. In the past, we have defeated you on any number of occasions. Granted, there were times when your team beat my team, but those were lucky flukes.

The day of the game will soon be at hand. And no matter how hard you pray to a higher power or how many foam accoutrements you wear in support of the team from your area, your team will be defeated. We will win and you will lose. This is your fate.

Prepare for humiliation. It shall be upon you at the designated hour.

Serves you right, assholes. Yes, I know I shouldn't be celebrating a victory over a low-major team, but with the amount of whining they've done over the past 4 years claiming Marquette was "scared" to play them, or even more audaciously, that their team was on the same level as MU, tonight's 100-65 victory was a beautiful thing.

Feb. 20- at St. John's
Feb. 23- Rutgers
Feb. 25- at Villanova
March 1- Georgetown
Mar. 4- Florida Gulf Coast
Mar. 8- at Syracuse

The highlights include...

  • 18 Conference games, up from 16 last season
  • The Wisconsin game being played at night for once.
  • At least 12 appearances on National Television, making it easy for alums in say...St. Louis, MO to watch.
  • Sadly, no rumored non-conference matchup with Saint Louis U, which is a shame because Marquette and new SLU Coach Rick Majerus go together like Rick Majerus and doughnuts.
  • Home-and-homes with Seton Hall, Louisville, and Notre Dame, which should really stoke the flames of that Marquette-Seton Hall rivalry. It's just like Duke-Carolina, except with fans that don't care.
  • A seemingly totally out-of-place March matchup with Florida Gulf Coast University, a school that is younger (founded 1991) than its players.
  • The suspension and hopefully the eradication of the Blue and Gold Classic. MU says that Maine backed out of the event, but IUPUI and Florida Gulf Coast still wanted in. When Maine turns down the tournament, it's time to pull the plug on a tournament that in recent years even Marquette couldn't get up for (losses to Winthrop and North Dakota State).
  • In-State games with UW-Milwaukee and Wisconsin on back-to-back weekends
  • Thrilling matchups against BOTH Indiana University-Purdue University schools.
  • Unless you really care if the all-time series between UWM and Marquette is 35-0 Marquette or 34-1 Marquette, there's really no reason to show up at the Bradley Center untill 2008.

Stop on by and see selected members from the YCS staff at most of these games. You won't recognize us, but that's OK, because odds are, we won't recognize you either.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Of particular interest to our Marquette-based readers, are MU's 2007-08 Big East mirror games. This year it goes from a 16-game schedule to an 18-game conference slate, sadly meaning one less home game against the likes of Savannah State, and one more against the likes of Cincinnati and Syracuse. Dang.

This season, the Warriors will play every Big East side once, but will also have return trips against ....

Louisville, Notre Dame, and Seton Hall.

I am already regretting my decision to not attend Seton Hall Law School.

Sports History Landmark Bought Out; To Be Renovated

>> Tuesday

Only loosely related to sports, but pretty related to the staff of this esteemed website.

From the official Marquette University press release...
Marquette purchases building at 12th and Wells
Marquette University has purchased the Newbridge Apartments at the corner of 12th and Wells. The transaction was completed last week, at a reasonable cost. Marquette’s location, the changing dynamics of university life and the desire to enhance the campus environment make it prudent for the university to monitor property opportunities in our campus area. The Newbridge became available for purchase and presented an opportunity to solidify the campus’s northern border. The current plan is to leave the property vacant, because it will be easier to make major renovations if funding becomes available. Students who signed leases for the apartments have been offered housing in other properties owned by the seller or in university housing. While the building houses Jim Hegarty’s Pub, 1120 W. Wells St., the pub will continue to be owned by St. James Estates and will remain open. In the context of the university’s overall long-term planning, there is always discussion about multiple projects, new initiatives and general growth that require additional space.

Should renovations be undertaken, it will most likely mean a total overhaul of the building that is really just north of squalor, and the complete loss of the tough-as-nails identity and character for one of the great forums of sports discussion...The Establishment.

For one glorious and alcohol-fueled year, three of the current YCS staff writers inhabited this building in a simple three-bedroom sub-ground level apartment and remarkably paid less than $400 in rent each. The rest of the staff were frequent visitors. It was here that such great epic sports discussion battles as "Chicago Preliminary Olympic Plans v. Mass Chaos," "Kyle Orton v. Suck," "Sport v. Not-a-sport," "Iain's Arm v. Wall," and "Kyle Orton v. Suck II" were decided. It was also the host facility of the 2006 Beer Olympics , where the "Slipup in Flipcup" gave Team USA the gold, thus preventing Team Ireland from sweeping the Golds. Team Latvia finished a shameful third.

If Marquette chooses to renovate the apartments into bland, squeaky-clean, fun-free freshman dorms or something like that, that's fine. However, please kindly preserve The Establishment as a museum for posterity, to show what the perfect mixture of Jaegermeister, sports debate, 2AM Mortal Kombat, and gross neglect for basic sanitation can do to make our world a better place.
