Some Actual Truths on D-Wade Divorce

>> Friday

A few weeks ago, we heard the allegations from Mrs. Wade about D-Wade's trevails. Well, at least some of them are total BS, as D-Wade's seed has not been contaminated by STD's. Now, I'm sure D-Wade enjoyed the fruits of his labors on South Beach, but I'm pretty sure that Siovaughn will not be challenging Mother Teresa for sainthood anytime soon either and I'd be very leery at taking most of her accusations at face value.

Disappointing? Yes. Surprising? I don't know...

Just saw this story on Deadspin about court papers filed in Dwyane Wade's divorce from his wife.

In legal papers, she alleges he abandoned his children, committed adultery, and infected her with an unspecified sexually transmitted disease. She wants the names of ''all of his sexual partners'' during their six-year marriage.

Dwyane, named a ''Father of the Year'' in 2007 by the National Father's Day Committee, has gone ''months'' without seeing his boys, Siohvaughn says. His ''failure to spend time with them . . . has resulted in the children at times being afraid of him; in fact, Zion . . . does not recognize or know Dwyane.'' She wants sole custody, and support.

She also says she has suffered ''grievous physical, emotional and mental injury'' from the STD, diagnosed in the fall of '07. (The infection is not HIV or a ''killer thing,'' sources say.) Dwyane and his ''paramour or paramours'' are liable, she alleges.

As I'm sure all the guys on this blog remember, Wade was rumored to have these...proclivities when he was at Marquette. Hopefully, these allegations are merely the overblown product of ugly divorce proceedings, but...man. Only human, I guess.

For those of you who aren't Chicago-area Marquette alumni and therefore haven't had the following email sent to you by Chicago Alumni Association for the last several weeks, I thought I'd share it in the hope that you find it as silly as I do.

"Who's officiating tonight?"

>> Wednesday

Am I excited about the start of the NBA season? Of course. But the reservations abound. (And it has nothing to do with crotchety arguments why the NBA doesn't seem as magical as it did when you were in fourth fucking grade.)

No, I'm not all that concerned with the Donaghy thing, though I highly doubt that the every other ref is on the up-and-up as the recent round of NBA interrogations asserts. But that isn't the root of the problem. That goes back either to a) the dawn of the league or b) the beginning of superstardom in the NBA.

I'm mildly worried that another official on the take is going to impact a game or a playoff series. Who couldn't be? But it's one official--one official with limited chances to screw a certain team in over the course of a game.

My problem, as it's always been, is with the officials in general and their indelible impact on the game. Basketball may be the toughest sport to officiate. It's judgment call upon judgment call upon judgment non-call. The standards are necessarily vague, and thus, the power of the officiating crew is immense. And yet, the overlords aren't entirely powerless, but they sure do act like it.

I'm not sure I will ever take either of the last two NBA Finals seriously. I don't think any honest man can. In retrospect, the same might be true of the Bulls' fifth and sixth titles.

Tell me--What good is a championship when the officials give it to you? Or, to a lesser extent, the chance to play for one? Others may disagree, but I don't see that as much of an achievement.

Listen--I think Dwyane Wade is a great, stupendous, awesome guy like everyone does (especially those of us who went to Marquette). I'm also endlessly impressed with what LeBron has been able to do coming into the league as a freaking child and keeping his head so much better than any of the rest of us could and immediately becoming the most chirismatic man in professional sports.

But they've gotten help. Did they earn 99.5% of what they've returned on sheer talent and commitment? Absolutely. But neither deserved the pinnacle moments that have thus far defined their careers.

The Dallas-Miami finals in 2006 were a travesty. As was last year's Pistons-Cavs series. Neither Wade nor LeBron could do any wrong. No wait--They could. But they'd always have the stripes to pretend otherwise.

It's rare that I don't agree 100% with Rasheed Wallace, and this was no exception:

"There's a lot of people out here who think they really beat us," Wallace said. "It was ourselves. We beat ourselves. We fell victim to the little, personal NBA thing where they're trying to make it a world game and get ratings and all that. They wanted to put their darling (LeBron James) in there, and they did put him in there. Look what ended up happening.

"So this game, this ain't basketball no more, it's entertainment. It's like WWF. Ain't no more real wrestling. All the days of Ric Flair and Rick Rude and Jake the Snake. Right now, the (expletive) is all so fake. Just like this game. It's so fake."

How are people okay with this? How do people watch LeBron pile up points in overtime of a conference finals game with free throws that he didn't earn and not get frustrated?

People rip 'Sheed for overreacting late in Game 6 of that series, but if I were him, I doubt I've even been that civil. The Pistons had just endured a fuckover of a series like I've never seen, and yet they managed to neither attack anyone nor destroy any expensive equipment on the court. I don't think I'd have had such control.

Why does the NBA have to be like this? The black sheeps will never get a fair shake in the public eye or marketing world, but shouldn't the basketball court be the one place they can? It's bullshit--just pure fucking bullshit.

And I don't see it changing. Ever. And what's worse is that we're only at the start of a very long era of NBA superstar culture. Wade and LeBron have many, many years ahead of them. Duncan's not done either.

I still love the NBA. But yeah, it's gotten hard. I usually embrace the adaptations of a league and tell people to come off it when they try to say, "It's not like it used to be." But this is different. It's not progress; it's regression. It's not a natural adaptation; it's the blatant stiffling of natural adaptation. And it pisses me off.

I hope this season can prove me wrong. But my faith is dwindling.

Dwyane Wade's only post-season victory

>> Tuesday

The keg is still spitting top foam and Miami has already left the party, but that doesn't mean we can't talk about D-Wade. Because on a personal level, he's about to wrap up the series against Mark Cuban.

Remember that whole situation with Wade calling out Dirk for not being a leader, and everyone thought, "Man, I thought Flash was a cool guy. Why would he say something bad about a big, nice German fella?" and then Cuban called him a pussy, and Charles Barkley refused to put Wade in his five? Something like that...remember that? Well Wade might have been onto something.

"I got to take what they give me and they don't really give me a lot"

That's Dirk. Not exactly sounding like a leader.

"So I've got to make other stuff happen -- help out on defense more; hit the glass harder, as hard as I can, get some extra possessions; if I have a shot, try to knock it down and if I don't, move the ball and let someone else make a shot."

Well, that certainly makes him a good teammate and everything, but this is not how Wilt, Magic, Jordan, Kobe, Shaq (uh...you get the picture) won titles. You never heard any of them talk about "taking what they give me."

"They really go smaller and really sit down on my legs, don't let me put the ball down on the floor the way I want to and get to my spots."

This guy has gotten way too used to playing the Suns. It's called defense Dirk. It may not exist in the regular season, but these are the fucking playoffs. This is the season that people care about, and they'll do anything to win--even play defense.

Avery Johnson has said he's "Tired of hearing about how they've taken him out of his game and any lack of confidence."

I'd be tired of hearing about it too. In fact, if my star player was all of a sudden afraid to shoot a contested shot, I might go off on a rant like this:

"I wasn't the best of players and didn't have the best of skills, but you were not going to shake my confidence. We need all of our players to be confident, to be resilient, to be persistent and that's what I want to see tomorrow. If I don't see it at shootaround, I'm going to be highly upset ... because I need to have it going into that game tomorrow night. We've got to be confident and really sure about what we're doing."

Ouch. Do you think Avery can even blink without seeing Don Nelson's face?

Vindication!

I've already been reproached once (by my mom) for derisively referring to Dwyane Wade as "Wade the Christ" in my NBA Playoff preview post the other night. Well check out this lead from Bill Simmons's latest column:

Eric from Chicago: "Thought you might enjoy this piece on Dwyane Wade's $8.9 million pad. I went to Marquette while he was there and he was the most down-to-earth guy. If I didn't hear so many good stories about him, by looking at this link, I'd think Wade's ego is ginormous -- and maybe it is. But this link is enjoyable nonetheless."

Obviously he's not the only pro athlete with a ridiculously oversized mansion. At the same time, his exception only goes so far. Let's not canonize him just because he seems squeaky clean and went to Marquette(, mom).
(Hell, who'm I kidding? I'd get a Spiderman-themed bathroom too if I could afford it.)
