Jesus. I mean, what the hell.
Let's get one thing straight. The following opinions (which are sure to pop up, because they have been all season) are absolutely asinine:
1. Tom Crean should be fired.
2. Marquette would be better off without Dominic James.
Let's face it every year there's some nut job saying Tom Crean should be fired. And the only thing we would be better off without is have our name twice on the list of 5-two point bucket tounnament games.
I mentioned this on the Marquette boards, but I'm always amazed how 1.) Nobody calls for Tom Crean's head when they're winning.
and 2.) No other coaching candidates are mentioned. It's a very unconstructive debate.
By "winning" I mean, "winning a single game." After every loss the Crean-haters come out in droves.
That's all well and good, but it is true that he's not regarded as a top-of-the-field in-game coach. That could certainly have some impact on the losses. Even when they beat Pitt in '03, it was kind of in spite of his hold-the-ball approach that almost cost them the game.
When the game gets tense, he seems to tense up too. Appearances can be deceiving, so I can't say that for sure. But seriously, look at the way his nostrils flare up all weird, and his eyes widen. It's not very reassuring.
True, but don't all coaches have different skill sets and strengths? Crean may not be a great in-game coach, but it would at least appear that he has a pretty good eye for recruiting (Dwyane Wade, Travis Diener, Jerel McNeal, Wes Matthews), and development (Dwyane Wade, Ousmane Barro).
He may be an awful in-game coach, but if a different coach was there, he might not have the same talent to work with.
When Crean-haters say "Fire Crean" but don't recommend anyone else, it has a very Grossman-Griese sort of feel to it. It's a tradeoff.
Crean is a very good recruiter, an excellent motivator, solid at constructing game plans, but still weak with in-game adjustments. On the whole, he's a slightly above average X's and O's coach, since you have to take into account gameplans along with in-game adjustments. The way he schooled Jamie Dixon in both regular season match-ups was awesome. He has shown enough signs of improvement with X's and O's that I think he will strengthen that part of his acumen in time.
