This is one of those tough moments as a sports fan when you decide whether you jump on with the hype or defiantly go about your own business.
Don't get me wrong; I really enjoy watching boxing. But I know almost nothing about its finer points. Were I to go out of my way tonight to see Mayweather-De La Hoya, it would only be to feel like I'm not missing out. If not for that aspect, would I really feel the need to watch it? Of course not. I could be almost as entertained watching two lightweights knock each other silly on ESPN2. But thanks to the enormous coverage of this fight, I'm gonna feel like a total chump if I miss it.
Well, I've always been one to cave to peer pressure, so I guess I'll go somewhere to watch it and pretend I know what top-notch boxing is. Am I the only one in this boat?

The Highland Manor has dished out the $54.95 to watch the fight.
You guys know you can't afford that. You're poor.
Well it turns out I couldn't watch the fight. But I hear it was the best fight since Flamenco-Little Mac II.
Warning: Nate, don't read this until you watch the DVR of the fight.
Anyway, the fight was pretty good. Mayweather (who, by the way, should be tops on YCS' list of cocky, shady ass sons of bitches) fought a damn good fight, it's impossible to really connect on him. De La Hoya fought OK, but he got wild with his punches and, like I said, didn't connect on much.
I'm not sure how many casual fans are going to come over to the sport, or if it really "saved boxing," but it was all in all a damn good bout. The only real shame is that Oscar's not in his prime, it would have really been something to see Pretty Boy and Golden Boy when they were both in their prime. The contrast in styles is really fascinating.
The Mayweather entrance with the sombrero and 50 Cent wearing a Mexican flag bullet proof vest was an absolute all-time classic.
Overall, it was a pretty solid fight. I thought it was pretty even through 6 rounds, but Mayweather just absolutely wore out De La Hoya in rounds 7-12.
This fight alone is probably not enough to save boxing, but if you can do a few of these and figure out a way to fix the ass-backwards title structure, the sport may still have a chance of remaining relevant.
Count me in as a poor sap who had some interest in the fight but would not shell out the money needed to get it a PPV or watch at it a sports bar somewhere (Lewis-Tyson was greatly enhanced by its viewing at a Mexican Pool Hall). I was very happy to find out that Mayweather won during a brief 12:45 a.m. Sportscenter tune-in between picks of my NFL Head Coach draft.
On the NFL Head Coach note, I was majorly thrilled that Reggie Bush dropped to me at 6 in the 2006 Draft.
