Who's your MVP of the over-40 crowd?
>> Sunday
I was watching the Phils-Cubs game today, and I couldn't help but notice that Jamie Moyer, the oldest active player in the MLB, is actually still being paid to play the game.
As one of the least knowledgeable and least regular contributors to this blog, I won't try to offer any insight or wax poetic on older players in baseball. I will however ask all of you to vote for your MVP of the MLB over-40 crowd and briefly justify your choice.
Your nominees are as follows:
Jamie Moyer - 45
Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux - 42
John Smoltz, Doug Brocail - 41
Jeff Kent, Kent Mercker, Luis Gonzalez, Tom Gordon, and Trevor Hoffman - 40
I couldn't help but notice that four of the five starting pitchers from the '95 Braves are on the list. It's too bad Steve Avery didn't stick around too. I'd still take Maddux because (1.) he's Maddux, and (2.) good starting pitching is harder to come by.

As much as I'd love to say Maddux, Smoltz and Hoffman have been performing to a higher level the last few years. And since Smoltz is a starter and Hoffman a reliever, Smoltz it is.
Speaking of which, when is a team gonna finally break and sign Bonds? Say what you will about his personality and HGH etc, the man is still a great hitter. What a waste.
Keeping with the whole "asshole" theme, I'd probably say Jeff Kent. The guy is 40 now and had a 121 OPS+ with 20 HR for a 2B last year. He's still, if I'm not mistaken, hitting cleanup for the Dodgers too.
It actually raises an interesting question for his HOF candidacy - 360+ career HR, 120something career OPS+...pretty damn good for a 2B and in my opinion a better resume than Biggio, who will almost certainly get in.
For this argument though, he probably isn't number 1 since he just turned 40. I'll go Smoltz. And Gabe Kapler. Wait, he's only 32. Weird, doesn't it seem like Gabe Kapler should be way older than that? Also, he has 4 (!) homers.
Definitely Smoltz, who has pitched at an elite level into his 40's.
Also, I have to think Kent gets in the Hall of Fame, as his offensive numbers rival that of any 2B already in the Hall.
Also - Kent Mercker is still pitching!
