Local Blogger Still Catching Up after weeklong vacation
>> Thursday
OK, so it's a bit of an oldie (2 weeks) but no one else commented on it, and I just recently found out about it, so I'll throw my oversized 7 & 5/8ths hat into the ring.
Jerry Porter got fined $210,000 by the NFL for changing his number from 84 to 81.
The NFL's justification is that the fine is needed to reimburse the team and Reebok for unsold #84 Porter Jerseys.
First of all, does the NFL really need the money?
Secondly, what's the logical extreme of this? If a player gets traded, will they have to pay the NFL for all those jerseys? Whatever happened to all those Randy Moss Raiders jerseys? What if a player picks a new team via free agency? Will they have to reimburse Reebok in a similar manner?
Thirdly, NFL spokesman Steve Alic said Porter could wait until next year, when the supply of unsold shirts would be depleted and the cost would be less, before making the change.
Why would anyone buy a jersey that's only going to be relevant for a year? OK, aside from jersey hounds, memorabilia-seekers, Zuch, and everyone at Wrigley Field wearing a Gary Gaetti jersey?
This is just an asinine move by the NFL.

Sever, that would be Jerry Porter you would be talking about. Joey Porter is the linebacker who recently left the Steelers for the Dolphins. Jerry Porter is the Raiders receiver in question with this post.
On the subject of this post, that is one ridiculous fine. I could see $5,000-10,000, but over $200,000.
No kidding. If anything, shouldn't the league be happy about this?
I'm probably the last one to refer to in business matters...Danny...but you'd think that him changing numbers would, if anything, generate a spike in his jersey sales, since his fans (of which there can't be many in Oakland anymore anyway) would probably run out and get the new number. I would imagine this is what happened when Kobe changed from 8 to 24. Granted, Porter isn't Kobe, but still, I would imagine his sales numbers would be better after the switch than they are now.
Good call, Zuch. For some reason it won't let me correct it.
Never been good with similar-sounding names in similar professions. This is probably why I can't keep the names of all the terrorists straight.
That, and the fact that you're a racialist and all those names sound the same to you.
Perhaps, but then again, it also took me a while working in DC to realize that Rockford, Rock City, Rock Island, Rockton, Rock Falls, Roscoe, and Rochelle were all different towns in the Congressman's district.
