What apalls me about this signing is not the sheer amount of money but the fact that there's a GM out there who believes Barry Zito is as valuable as Vernon Wells. The Giants deserve some credit here-for finally signing a player under the age of 35.
However, $126 million for Barry Zito? When you comparables at age 28 include Mike Hampton, Ramon Martinez, Kevin Appier, and Jack McDowell, surely this is not a good omen for things to come.

I guess what baffles me most about everyone's Zito love is that not only are his more under-the-surface stats (i.e. K/BB, GB/FB, etc) not very impressive, but his glamour stats (i.e. W-L, ERA) haven't been that good lately. I just don't know what people see in him. I guess his 2003 Cy Young and his ripping guitar skills. I don't know.
